The foundation of Veer Narmad South Gujarat University was the result of sustained efforts by educationists and social leaders of South Gujarat, notably Shri Atisukhshankar Trivedi, supported by leading education societies of Surat and Navsari.
In July 1960, a committee of educationists was formed under the auspices of the Sarvajanik Education Society, Surat, to propose the establishment of a separate university for South Gujarat. The proposal gained national recognition when it was submitted to Dr. C. D. Deshmukh, then Chairman of the University Grants Commission.
The Veer Narmad South Gujarat University Act was passed in 1965. Shri Chandravadan Chunilal Shah was appointed as the first Vice-Chancellor in August 1966, and the University was formally incorporated during the Third Five-Year Plan period.
The University campus developed progressively, with administrative offices and the central library shifting to the campus in 1976, followed by academic departments between 1977 and 1981.
The circular crest of Veer Narmad South Gujarat University symbolizes a spiral six-pointed star enclosed within the sun. The emblem represents the University’s motto “Satyam Gyanam Anantam”, meaning Truth, Knowledge, and Infinity.
